Gen Hua YUE, Ph.D.
Senior Principal Investigator

Dr Yue got his Bachelor and Master degree at the Nanjing Agricultural University in 1986 and 1989 respectively, and worked at the same university as teaching assistant and lecturer from 1989 to 1994. He obtained his Ph.D under the supervision of Professor Hermann Geldermann at the University Hohenheim, Germany in June, 1999. His Ph.D thesis focused on porcine genome mapping. He joined Dr. Laszlo Orban’s group working on fish biotechnology and reproductive genomics at the Institute of Molecular Agrobiology in September 1998. He has been leading a group working on the Strategic Research Program (SRP) at the Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL) since December 2003. Currently he is a Director (SRP).

Research Interests

The research focus of our group is to use molecular and quantitative genetic approaches to improve the productivity and sustainability of economically important fish and plant species. Specific areas of interest include

  • Development of genomic resources, and platform technologies for genotyping DNA markers
  • Development of cost-effective and high throughput DNA pedigree systems
  • Elucidating the genetic basis underlying commercially important traits through QTL mapping, whole genome association mapping
  • Selective breeding programs for genetic improvement
  • Analyses of genetic diversity in natural populations

Current Projects

  • Molecular breeding of Jatropha curcas, a plant for biodiesel
  • Selective and molecular breeding of foodfish species (Asian seabass and tilapia)
  • DNA markers for genetic improvement of oil palm
  • Microsatellite genotyping service (for breeding salmon and tilapia)
  • Developing DNA markers and cost-effective genotyping technologies for pedigree analysis and genetic traceability of important foodfish species
