Singapore Launches First Container Fish Farm to Boost Local Food Production
Singapore unveiled its first urban container fish farm in Tampines on Nov 19, supporting the national “30 by 30” goal of producing 30% of its food domestically by 2030. Located next to Tampines Round Market, the farm will raise jade perch, expected to be market-ready in 4–6 months. The fish will be sold to local fishmongers at cost, with consumer prices reaching up to $38/kg.

The project is a collaboration between Aqualita Ecotechnology (a Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory spin-off) and Tampines Town Council. The farm uses a container-based system to grow fish efficiently in urban areas. Efforts are underway to improve jade perch feed to reduce fat buildup and potentially shorten the farming period from six months to as little as one.
Local leaders, including Minister Masagos Zulkifli, expressed strong community support and highlighted other urban farming successes in Tampines, such as rooftop vegetable farms and tilapia fish farms.
