First batch of freshwater fish harvested from Tampines container farm

15 Jun 2024

Singapore’s first container-based urban fish farm, a collaboration between Aqualita Ecotechnology and Tampines Town Council with support from Temasek Foundation, is now producing freshwater jade perch—a nutritious, Omega-3-rich fish—just minutes away from the Tampines Round Market.

This innovative 20-foot shipping container farm, launched in November 2023, is part of Tampines’ push to become an eco-town and contributes to Singapore’s “30 by 30” food security goal. The compact, high-yield system produces up to 560kg of fish per harvest, with a grow-out period of six months.

Jade perch from the farm is now sold at cost to local fishmongers to keep prices affordable, offering a mid-priced alternative to salmon. Residents who have tried the fish praise its freshness and quality.

The initiative not only shortens the farm-to-table supply chain, reducing logistics and middleman costs, but also demonstrates how climate-resilient, space-efficient farming methods can thrive in urban environments. As other local farms face closures due to cost pressures, this project highlights a sustainable path forward for urban aquaculture in land-scarce Singapore.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment Mr Baey Yam Keng reaffirmed government support for local farming innovation, noting the importance of consumer and business support to ensure the sector’s long-term viability.
