Dr Snezhana Oliferenko, Principal Investigator

Snezhana Oliferenko obtained her university diploma (1994) at the Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia. She went on to complete her Ph.D. thesis in cell biology (1999) at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna, Austria. She spent her postdoctoral years in the laboratory of Mohan Balasubramanian (IMA, Singapore), where she learned to appreciate simple systems and got a taste for genetics. In 2002 Snezhana started her own group at the Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory.

Research Projects

Asymmetry and reproduction are inherent properties of living organisms. On a cellular level these can be interpreted as processes of polarity specification and cell division regulated by signal transduction pathways and mechanistically carried out by the cytoskeleton. Cytoskeletal structures such as microtubules are based on polymers that can self-assemble in a test tube but are regulated in living cells in a tight spatio-temporal manner. We are interested in understanding basic design principles in building cytoskeletal assemblies during growth and division using the simple unicellular eukaryote Schizosaccharomyces pombe as a model organism.

Currently, we pursue the following lines of research:

  • Molecular mechanisms underlying biogenesis of microtubule-organizing centers
  • Assembly and remodeling of interphase microtubule arrays
  • Development of tools for image analysis
  • Nuclear division
