Prof Jimmy Kwang, Senior Principal Investigator

Jimmy Kwang received his PhD degree in molecular virology in 1987 from the school of veterinary medicine, University of california at Davis. After one year of postdoctoral training at UC San Diego, school of medicine, he was recruited as senior scientist to work on the gene delivery and gene therapy projects in Viagene, San Diego. In 1989, he set up an animal disease research lab within the meat animal research center(MARC), USDA at clay center, Nebraska. His research projects were focused on the vaccinology and development of cost-effectiveness diagnostic tests. In 1997, he moved to IMA, NUS, Singapore and was appointed as associate professor to set up Animal Health Biotechnology Group. In 1999, he was promoted to Professor. Since 2002, he is professor within Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory, NUS.

Research Interests
  • Characterize immunogenic/antigenic or virulence factors of each disease at the molecular level.
  • Develop a specific, sensitive, rapid and economical diagnostic procedure for each pathogen.
  • Design effective disease control programs for flocks, herds and schools housed in modern production.
  • Produce monoclonal antibodies for used in antigen detection procedures.
  • Humanized murine mabs for human therapy.

Research Projects

Animal diseases caused by bacteria and viruses are of economic importance in many countries and pose a continued threat to countries that are disease free. Research projects in AHB are numerous and varied, primary emphasis is on

  • Molecular Biology of pathogen replication
  • Pathogen – cell interactions
  • Pathogenesis of the organisms
  • Host response to pathogens infection and preventative strategies
Our studies integrate molecular microbiology, genomics, biochemistry and cell biology to address important questions in controlling diseases in chicken, swine, shrimp and fish. The goal is to develop information and technologies needed in animal health and preventive medicine programs for use by animal breeders, veterinary practitioners, agri-businesses, diagnosticians and regulatory agents. The research will lead to a better understanding of immunity against diseases, immunopathology of diseases, identification of important immunological epitopes of pathogenic organisms, characterisation of antibodies and their corresponding antigens, development of effective diagnostic methods and application of recombinant technology for vaccine production (including the gene-deleted vaccine, DNA vaccine, subunit vaccine and vector vaccine). It will also provide information necessary to devise management strategies that will break the disease cycle and reduce infection and disease risks.
